| DALLAS -- The
last year of the twentieth century begins this holiday season, and hairstylists
everywhere face the challenge of welcoming it with hair fit for festivities.
"The 1998/1999 holiday season is unique because it indicates the
last year of the decade and of the century," says Dayton Mast, owner
of Dallas' L'Image Salons and Spas. "Holiday hair must capture the
feel of the '90s, but also incorporate the classic elements from the past,
with an eye towards the future."
Weather it is childhood pigtails, adolescent center parts, teen "wings,"
professional bobs or sophisticated updos, Mast feels hair styles embody
the feeling of a certain place and time.
"Holiday and social gatherings go hand in hand, so women have an
excuse to dress up and flaunt their glamorous sides." explains Mast.
"Hair styles should command attention with their ingenuity, yet remain
classic enough to look beautiful in family photo albums for years to come.
"
For the '98 holidays, stylists at L'Image recommend incorporating the
technology of

the present with the intrigue of the past.
The classic bouffant harks back to earlier times, but, when altered
for this holiday season's galas, it captures the sleekness of the present
and future. To update the bouffant: spray dry hair with spray gel, backcomb
hair from the base, then carefully smooth hair on top of the base, leaving
highlighted strands free at the temple.
Another versatile style that says "retro romance" and "contemporary
flair" for the holidays is an update of the flapper girl look of the
1930s. To achieve this "past meets present" style, apply gel
thoroughly into clean, chin-length hair, then fingerwave the saturated
half using fingers and a comb.
When waving is completed, spray hair with a strong-hold spray and dry
under chair dryer, giving hair a glassy finish that is perfect for a night
on the town or a New Year's Eve bash. Use a feminine rhinestone or pearl
barrette on the side for added drama and glamour.
Take the advice of Mast and the L'Image stylists this holiday season;
welcome the last year of the century by making a

statement with a "past meets present"
hair style. Use a new twist on an old 'do to incorporate the glamour of
the past with the technology of tomorrow.
Dayton Mast, a member of the prestigious Intercoiffure International,
established L'Image Salon 21 years ago in Dallas' Highland Park. Since
that time L'Image has grown to encompass four salons, two full-service
day spas and Cosmetique, a fine gift, jewelry and fragrance boutique adjacent
to each salon.
Mast has also been featured in numerous magazines, including Vogue,
Glamour, Woman's Day, Allure, In Style, Redbook, Bride's and Mademoiselle.
L'Image stylists attend monthly classes to keep up with the season's
trends and styles. This has contributed to L'Image's reputation as one
of Dallas' foremost salons. "Keeping abreast of what is happening
on the runways and in the streets is important to us so we can pass the
information on to our clients," says Mast. "Education is the
key to understanding precisely what our clients want and need in terms
of trends and the latest hair fashions."
